Expert warns of ‘major contributor to heat loss’ that’s making your home cold – cheap fix

As winter continues and temperatures drop, homeowners often find themselves reaching for the thermostat to keep their homes warm and cosy.

However, despite having the heating running, they might still be experiencing a chilly home.

This could be a result of three common factors, warned interior expert Warren Kinloch from Bathroom Deal.

The expert claimed that one of these mistakes is a “major contributor for heat loss” around the home.

1. Furniture is too close to the radiator

One common mistake people make unknowingly is that they place furniture too close to the radiator.

While it may seem like a logical way to maximise heat distribution, it can actually “hinder the effectiveness of your heating system”.

Warren explained: “Furniture acts as a barrier, preventing warm air from circulating freely around the room.

“To optimise heat flow, ensure that there is sufficient space between your furniture and radiators.”

The expert claimed that this can allow the warm air to circulate freely and “warms up the entire room more efficiently”.

2. Leaky windows and doors

Leaky windows and doors can be a “major contributor to heat loss” in a home.

Cold drafts from poorly sealed windows and doors can offset the warmth generated by the heating system.

Households can check for drafts by running their hand along window frames and door edges.

If they feel a draft, Warren recommended they add weatherstripping or applying caulk to seal gaps. Caulk is the cheapest out of the two methods and retails for £1.19 at ScrewFix.

For those looking for a more long-term solution, they should look to replace their old windows and doors with more energy-efficient ones.

3. Incorrect thermostat settings

Warren highlighted that misconfigured thermostat settings can be a “sneaky factor” contributing to a chilly home.

He warned that many homeowners “unknowingly” set their thermostats incorrectly, which can lead to “inadequate heating.”

Her urged: “You should always double check that your thermostat is programmed correctly, and consider investing in a smart thermostat for more precise temperature control.”
