Why the Royal Family still write letters to each other rather than pick up the phone

Mr Fitzwilliams said: “In our age which is dominated by social media, the Royal Family famously write letters which is more formal and also have a cachet when they are received by others. They are often treasured by the recipients.

“The King has a charmingly fogeyish side and reportedly does not own a mobile.

“He is known to be a keen letter writer and there is something personal about writing letters which is somehow becoming when you are royal.”

Speaking of the King and Sarah’s apparent exchange, he added: “Anyone can send a text or email or, indeed, use the telephone. The King and Sarah Ferguson, both suffering from cancer, reportedly find solace in writing letters to each other.

“It is unusual today but the letter, far rarer than it was, has a certain status. You somehow feel the person cares that bit more if they have put pen to paper.”

The late Queen is also said to have liked to write letters as a form of communication – including two from her deathbed in 2022.

Although contents remain unknown, the late monarch is said to have included one for her eldest son, the now-King Charles and a close confidant, her devoted private secretary Sir Edward Young.

According to author Omid Scobie, Meghan Markle is said to have exchanged letters with the King – prior to her departure from the Royal Family.

Shortly after her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan wrote a letter to her estranged father Thomas Markle.

In one letter, Meghan appeared to accuse him of “breaking my heart into a million pieces”.
