UK snow forecast: New maps show giant 430-mile wall of snow bring -7C Arctic blast


A 430-mile wall of snow is heading for the UK in an Arctic blast, bringing with it temperatures of -7C. WXCharts has forecast the wintery weather to come at the start of next month, hitting on March 1.

Snow will move in from the west in a 430-mile wall the length of the country, from Durness to Glasgow before ending in Harrogate. It will be heaviest in northwest Scotland, over the Cairngorms and Ullapool, at up to 18cm an hour.

Rain will be following behind the snow, covering the west coast of Britain from Plymouth to Kilmarnock and much of Northern Ireland. There will also be some rain over Manchester, Birmingham, Middlesbrough and Swindon.

The east coast of the country will miss most of the snow and rain, with some showers here and there.

Temperatures will drop to as low as -7C in central Scotland and north Scotland will be between -5C and –1C. South Scotland and Northern Ireland will be around 0C.

North England between Manchester and Newcastle it will be between 0C and 3C, Wales will be around 3C, and the midlands and the south of England will be around 6C.

Today:

A band of rain will move across the north and west today, with heavy bursts in places. Sunny spells and heavy showers will develop across Scotland this afternoon, and turning chilly. Largely dry, cloudy and mild in the southeast.

Tonight:

Cloudy with drizzle in the south this evening, colder in the north with clear skies. Heavy rain and strong winds will spread across the UK overnight, gales around western coasts.

Wednesday:

After a wet and windy start, rain will gradually clear most areas in the afternoon, leaving bright and breezy weather behind. Mild, but feeling cooler in the wind.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Turning colder from Thursday with spells of heavy rain and showers. Sunny spells are likely between showers, and showers may be wintry over the tops of hills in the north.
