Winter in Europe usually means plunging temperatures and snowy spells but one island bucks this trend with mild temperatures and sunshine all year round – even in January.
If you’re looking to escape the winter chill, the Canary Islands could be just the ticket.
These Spanish islands, just off the coast of Morocco, are only a four-hour flight from London and offer some of the warmest weather in Europe during the winter months.
Popular spots like Tenerife, Grand Canaria, and Lanzarote are favourites among holidaymakers.

The island’s varied landscape is truly captivating from golden and black sand beaches to the dramatic lunar-like scenery of Teide National Park.
According to the Met Office, the average temperature in Tenerife during January is a balmy 21C – perfect for lounging on the beach.
The sea temperature also averages around 20C in January, so it’s warm enough for a swim.
Evenings can be a bit chillier though, with temperatures typically dropping to around 12C.
