Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, has just been named one of the world’s ‘best cities’ in 2024 – despite it being a renowned crime hotspot. Time Out magazine quizzed city-dwellers about the quality of its food, culture and nightlife – and how their home made them feel.
Ranked 30th in the table, a Time Out contributor celebrated the “identity and sense of community” that is “infused into its soul”. Whether drawn to its historic landmarks, cultural attractions, or simply the warmth of its people, Glasgow has it all, it says.
Although the city has been hailed with a new prestigious and ultimately positive title, it is still known for its high crime rates in Scotland, which regularly dominates news headlines.
According to statista.com, the city currently ranks just below Dundee for crime. The current crime rate level for 2022 to 2023, was 768 crimes per 10,000 people. And in May last year, it was rated Scotland’s “second most dangerous place to live.”
But away from the data, the city is nestled on the banks of the River Clyde, and is home to stunning Victorian architecture, world-class museums, and lively nightlife – meaning tourists who do decide to visit are in for a varied experience.
It is a city that is a testament to Scotland’s rich history, culture and progressive spirit. The name “Glasgow” derives from a Gaelic phrase meaning “green valley” or “dear green place”. It is the fourth largest city in the UK after London, and is home to more than 630,000 residents.
