Supermarket urgent food warning for popular meal deal snack over allergy fears

Co-op has issued an urgent food warning to customers about its Co-op Treat Brookie Bar, which can be purchased as a sweet snack in its £4 meal deal.

The affected batches have been withdrawn from Co-op stores across the UK to protect customers.

It comes after an allergy alert was issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to reveal that some batches of the Brookies contained “undeclared milk”.

A statement from the FSA read: “Co-op is recalling Co-op Treat Brookie Bar because it may contain milk, which is not mentioned on the label.

“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.”

Co-op customers who have purchased the product have been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.

Anyone who has purchased a TReat Brookie Bar and has an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents is urged not to eat it.

Instead, return the product to the nearest Co-op store for a refund, with or without a receipt.

The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to shoppers in-store which details the same advice.

According to Allergy UK, signs and symptoms usually occur within minutes of contact with cow’s milk, but can also occur up to one hour later.

The charity advised: “Most allergic reactions are mild but they can also be moderate or severe. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction which can be life-threatening.”

Mild to moderate symptoms include:

  • Itchy mouth, tongue and throat
  • Swelling of lips, around the eyes or face
  • Red raised itchy rash (often called nettle rash, hives or urticaria)
  • Vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea
  • Runny nose and sneezing
