‘I’m a mechanic and petrol and diesel drivers may be at risk at the fuel pump’

Leading mechanic Scotty Kilmer has warned petrol and diesel drivers could be under threat every time they top-up at the fuel pump.

The motoring expert claims drivers could “cut their hand” while simply filling up their vehicle as a horrifying new trend sweeps across America.

He claimed razor blades were being put inside fuel handles with the sharp edges slicing into unaware customers.

The blades are well concealed meaning road users were unlikely to notice anything unless they actively stopped to check.

Although the craze has not yet made it to the UK, road users should still be on their guard just in case the issue starts to show up.

Speaking on a YouTube video, Scotty said: “Here’s a warning that you may never have thought of before. Before you get that gas pump and pump gas. It turns out there are some lunatics out there that are sticking razor blades on the gas pump handle.

“It happened in North Carolina at various other gas stations, you end up cutting your hand if you’re grabbing it fast.”

Forest City Police Department in North Carolina confirmed they had been “multiple instances” of razor blades being placed on fuel handles.

Officers later specified that there had been three confirmed incidents across the neighbourhood.

They added: “We are actively investigating these instances now in cooperation with the state Department of Agriculture and will follow up with more information when available.

“In the meantime, please be aware of your surroundings while pumping gas and always check before grabbing the gas pump handle. Thank you and stay safe.”

Scotty has encouraged all motorists to take precautions when topping up to make sure they are not accidentally injured.

He urged drivers to check their fuel pump handles before squeezing down and possibly shaking the device to make sure it is clear.

Scotty added: “Yes the world has indeed gone insane. I made a a few months ago warning you before you put your credit card in to grab the little piece because if it comes out they are scamming information for your credit card.

“Well this one’s even worse, they are trying to cut your hand when you grab it.

“So don’t just grab it when you’re talking on your phone, take a look at it, maybe pull it out, shake it a little and see if there’s a razor blade stuck in there.”
