The skies over Barcelona were the scene of concern on Friday night as Spain reported a sighting of what appeared to be a “possible ballistic missile”.
According to the Fireballs and Meteorites Research Network (SPMN) of the Institute of Space Sciences of the CSIC, an artificial fireball, potentially a ballistic missile, traversed the eastern peninsula before vanishing into the sea south of the Valencian Community.
The fireball, identified by the institute as SPMN290324ART, made its journey over Spanish airspace around 11:59 p.m., leaving astronomers and enthusiasts bewildered. Originating from France, the fireball’s trajectory took it over Girona and Barcelona before it headed out to the Balearic Sea, ultimately reaching its end point south of the Valencian Community.
Ballistic missiles are known for following a predetermined path to deliver warheads to specific targets. While this incident has sparked alarm, it is vital to note that further investigation is needed to confirm the nature of the object observed over Barcelona’s skies.
