Duchess Sophie enjoys favourite pastime ahead of royal Easter Sunday celebrations

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, took a break from her recent busy schedule of royal duties as she was seen riding a carriage in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Good Friday.

The Duchess and her husband Prince Edward are among the senior members of the Royal Family who have been undertaking a greater number of engagements while King Charles and Princess Kate take time off due to ill health.

However the 59-year-old was able to take a break yesterday as she trotted around Windsor, holding the reins of a single horse-drawn carriage wearing a waxed riding coat.

Carriage riding is a hobby enjoyed by many members of the Royal Family, including Sophie and Edward’s daughter, Lady Louise Windsor.

She in turn took up the sport to follow in the footsteps of her late grandfather, Prince Philip, with much of the family heavily involved in equestrianism.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are likely to be among the members of the Firm in attendance at the Easter Sunday service at St George’s Chapel.

Their children Lady Louise and James, the Earl of Wessex, may also join them, however Prince William and Princess Kate have instead confirmed they will not go to church with the rest of the family.

They will be marking the occasion privately with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, as they handle the news of Kate’s recent cancer diagnosis.

In January this year the Princess of Wales underwent planned abdominal surgery, with Kensington Palace later saying in a statement that she was doing well but would not be back at work until after Easter.

Then on March 22 Kate released a video message explaining that following tests cancer had been found and she would be undergoing preventative chemotherapy.

William is also not expected to be back at work until after his children return to school after their Easter break, as he and Kate like to spend school holidays with their young family.
