Rishi Sunak signals economic 'green shoots' as he hails Britain's resilience

Rishi Sunak hailed the UK’s economic resilience as he said the public are seeing the “green shoots” of recovery.

The Prime Minister insisted “things are getting better” following the cost of living crisis and stagnant growth.

Lashing out at gloomsters for talking down Britain, Mr Sunak said people are beginning to feel like there’s more money in their pockets.

“There is a palpable sense out there, regardless of what Keir Starmer might want to say because he’s always keen to talk down Britain, I can tell actually on the ground people are, since the beginning of this year, feeling that the economy has turned the corner, he said.

“They do see those green shoots. They can see that things are getting better.”

Speaking at the Welsh Conservative Conference in Llandudno the PM highlighted how inflation has more than halved in the past year meaning that price rises are starting to level out.

Mortgage rates are now falling, he said, while wages are rising.

He added: ““We just saw today energy bills significantly down. Consumer confidence, business confidence, again, a survey out yesterday, highest it’s been in years.

“Businesses like yours feeling better about the future and that is why it is so important that we stick to our plan.”

Mr Sunak was buoyed earlier this week when Bank of England boss Andrew Bailey said Britain’s “very small recession” may already be over.

He said there are “distinct signs of an upturn” as he signalled better times ahead.

And he raised hopes that interest rates could be slashed sooner than expected in a boost for mortgage payers.

Experts have urged Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to give taxpayers “the break they deserve” in next month’s Budget.

New figures show the government racked up a record surplus £16.7 billion last month with the TaxPayers Alliance saying it should pave the way for an income tax cut.
