How to cut grass after winter – follow crucial 'rule' to avoid killing your grass

When is the best time to cut the grass at the beginning of the year?

The experts suggest that on average the 18th March is the best time to cut the lawn for the first time that year.

The same date applied for last year. However, in 2022, it was the 20th March which is also known as ‘First Cut Sunday’ which is a term penned by Flymo.

But it of course all depends on the weather that year.

The one-third rule

Taking this into consideration it means you should never cut more than a third of your grass when moving for the first time that year.

If you cut too much then it can stress the grass meaning it will lead to weeds and killing of the grass.

Instead, if you trim the grass gradually over a period of time then it will have a healthier look.

Flymo explained: “If your lawn has been a little unkempt throughout the colder months and has grown with a mind of its own then fear not, still follow the one-third rule but take it in stages over a number of weeks.

“Gradually decrease the cutting height on your lawnmower each time to reach your preferred grass length.”
