Dramatic moment cliff face crumbles into the sea as tourists urged to 'stay away'

The dramatic moment a cliff face collapses into the sea has been captured on camera as experts warn about their “instability”

The rockslide at Lulworth Cove, Dorset, came after a torrent of rain and fossil hunters have been warned they could be put in peril at the location.

Noone was injured during the dramatic slide that was captured on camera yesterday (Sunday, February 19) by photographer Richard Mower, following a spate of recent slips including on February 11.

The Lulworth Rangers have now warned that yet another slide has blocked the beach below and took to Facebook to warn the public of the dangers they said that the rocks were unstable.

The post read: “Please note that the cliffs at Lulworth Cove are displaying further signs of instability.

“A major slip has occurred and has blocked the beach. Exercise caution at both the base and summit of the cliffs, and verify the tide schedule to prevent inadvertently endangering yourself.”

A spokesperson for the Lulworth Rangers told the Dorset Echo earlier in the month: “February is often a month with severe changes in environmental conditions, making the cliffs more prone to landslips as frozen material may thaw quickly, and heavy rainfall undermines stability too.

“The cliffs at Lulworth Cove are showing signs of instability. Small slips like this have been happening all morning. Take care at the base and top of cliffs and check tides to ensure you don’t inadvertently put yourself in harm’s way.”

Experts have also warned that cliffs are “vulnerable” to yet more collapses.

Sam Scriven, a geologist at the Jurassic Coast Trust, told the same local publication: “Any time there is a new rock fall, it may leave the cliff faces either side of that collapse more fragile and more vulnerable to further falls.

“We would always advise people to only ever if they’re going to explore the code, do so at very low tide and keep well away from the cliff face – And of course, stay away from the Cliff edge if you’re on the coast path.”

Further along the coast East Cliff which is famous for its appearance in drama series Broadchurch has seen three huge rockfalls recently.

Lulworth Cove is visited by thousands of people each year who come to see the panoramic views and clear waters on the World Heritage Site.
