Seriously?! Hard up Brits facing £150k bill to re-cover MPs' green benches in Commons

The House of Commons is drawing up plans to “repair and re-upholster” the historic green benches where MPs sit. British taxpayers will bear the cost of this “regal refurbishment” as they face an eye-watering £150,000 bill.

The chief of the TaxPayers’ Alliance has slammed the decision as an example of how out-of-touch MPs are. John O’Connell said taxes should be raising the comfort of the public, and not that of MPs. He urged MPs to sort out their priorities.

Officials inside Parliament are searching for a supplier of “leather hides” to refurbish the historic seat cushions and backrests. The contract for the work in the chamber would start next month and last five years.

Mr O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance blasted the decision: “Taxpayers will be green around the gills at the cost of this regal refurbishment.

“Parliament will cut costs when it comes to frontline services but is happy to splash out on Britain’s poshest benches. Politicians should be prioritising the comfort of taxpayers, not their own.”

The luxurious refurbishment plan comes only six months after £80,000 of taxpayers’ cash went on removing 12 weeping figs from the atrium at Portcullis House, where MPs have their offices. The trees were replaced with tables and chairs.

The House of Commons has said that no funding had been approved yet, and there was no commitment to award the tender.

A spokesman said any budget would be “scrutinised” with “value for money always sought”.

He added: “As custodians of a Grade I listed building, it is vital when repairs are needed that the materials provided are of a standard that fits within the nature of the building.”

Back in March, Labour frontbencher Thangam Debonnaire complained that the historic green benches in the Commons are sexist and should be replaced because they are too big for women

The shadow culture secretary said it is “ridiculous” that her legs dangle off the end “like a little girl”.
