Desperate Russian soldier claims Putin hiding real war death toll to avoid paying families

As enforced by a decree signed by Vladimir Putin, the families of deceased Russian servicemen are meant to be paid 5 million rubles (£42,000), while those injured on the battlefield should receive 3 million rubles (£25,000).

This is not the first claim that the Kremlin is failing to pay out. In June 2023, the mother of Mikhail Cherkasov said her son’s comrades told her of his death, but were forced to leave his body on the battlefield as it wasn’t “profitable” to bring him home.

Similarly, the wife of another soldier said her injured husband received two buckets of carrots and a bag of onions as his compensation, instead of the 3 million rubles.
