Whiten towels for ‘blinding’ results with cleaner’s miracle item that can be used at 20C

When putting white towels in the laundry, they may come out clean, but the greyish tinge will linger even after repeated washing sessions.

There is perhaps nothing uglier than a white towel that has turned a brownish-grey shade over time.

However, before you throw out the stained and discoloured towels, Mrs Hinch fans may be able to help.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Marnie Ryan asked: “What’s the best way to make my white towels white again? Bleach doesn’t seem to work.”

Bleach can be harsh on fabrics and can even cause damage or discolouration over time. Fortunately, there are alternative methods to keep your white towels sparkling without bleach.

Group members recommended a range of products in the comments section, but the one that seemed to be the most popular was the Vanish Oxi Stain remover – the crystal white edition.

Posting a photo of the product, Agnes Roberts said: “This Vanish is the best I have ever used.

“I put a scoop in drum with my detergent and my ancient white towels are like the driven snow.”

Selena Powell wrote: “The Vanish powder of whites is what I always use. It brings my dingy towels up really nicely.”

Sarah Keating warned: “Bleach will rot and make them yellow. I don’t use bleach on anything it’s horrible stuff. Instead, I use the Vanish stain remover in the white box.”

Lucia Johnson claimed: “Bleach turns whites a yellowish tone, I use Vanish when washing my clients’ whites, a miracle in a box.

“They turn a blinding shade of white. Just add a scoop to your washing machine on a 20-degree wash.”

Gina Turnball wrote: “Vanish in with every white wash brings them back looking white white again.”

Vanish Oxi Stain Remover can be picked up from Tesco for £4 or from Asda for £4.50

Instead of using any whitening products, one woman recommended simply using sunlight to whiten towels.

Sarah Wallace said: “I’ve had white towels for years and years now. On a sunny bright day, hang them up on the line. The UV will bleach them a blinding white.”
