Vladimir Putin critic Alexei Navalny dies in prison after health 'deteriorated'


Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has reportedly died in a penal colony, as announced by the Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service.

Navalny, a prominent critic of the Kremlin, was sentenced to a two-and-a-half-year prison term in February 2021 on charges of violating parole from a previous case.

The 45-year-old anti-corruption activist fell critically ill last year after being poisoned with a nerve agent, an incident he and many Western leaders blamed on the Russian government.

The Kremlin has consistently denied any involvement.
