Used car buyers could ‘drain their finances’ if they do not research and stick to a budget

The vehicle insurance provider One Sure Insurance has shared advice that can help motorists avoid feeling remorse after buying a used car.

With cars typically being the second-most expensive item a person owns, it is important that drivers make sure that they thoroughly check any vehicle before they buy it.

A spokesperson for One Sure Insurance noted that drivers can avoid hassle and expensive repair bills by researching local dealers and the models they want to buy.

They advised: “Before hitting car dealerships or private sellers online, research the make and model of the car you’re interested in. Some models will be more energy efficient than others, which can lead to them being a drain on your finances.

“It’s also important to consider maintenance costs and whether your model could increase your insurance premium. Searching on forums like Reddit and reading reviews of the models you’re interested in can give you a window into whether the car will work for you.”

The company also recommended that drivers should always start by creating a suitable budget that they can stick to.

Whilst having a figure in mind can help drivers make sure they do not get carried away when buying their next vehicle, researching running costs can also show how much it will cost to maintain.

Drivers should also make sure they know how much taxing and insuring the car will be, particularly with both figures on the rise.

One Sure Insurance’s spokesperson also highlighted that, when a motorist is looking at a car, they should be sure to inspect all of the documents it comes with.

They explained: “Make sure the seller has all the necessary documents on hand such as a V5C and MOT certificate. Check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the car matches the number on the V5C.

“You can usually find this on the dashboard or windshield. It should also be in registration and insurance documents if you can’t spot this.”

Finally, One Sure Insurance also encouraged prospective buyers to get behind the wheel to make sure everything is in full working order.

They continued: “Don’t be afraid to book a test drive and inspect the car internally and externally.

“For an internal inspection when you’re at the wheel, test all lights, indicators, wipers and air conditioning to ensure they function correctly.”
