US troops under 'constant threat' as Iran plots revenge for deadly Israeli airstrike

“We take that seriously and we take the appropriate force protection measures we need to as the threat changes to make sure that they can protect themselves, and that has not changed. That will not change.”

Kirby highlighted the role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), branding it as a significant source of support for groups responsible for attacks against US interests in the region.

The IRGC, designated as a terrorist organization by the US in 2019, operates globally through its elite Quds Force and coordinates with various militias, including those in Iraq and Syria.

Kirby added: “We take the threat to our people in our own facilities seriously and we know that those groups, many of the groups that conduct those kinds of attacks, are supported, funded, resourced by the IRGC.”

The recent tensions stem from the embassy strike, which killed high-ranking IRGC commanders. Iranian officials have responded with vows of severe retaliation, raising concerns about further escalation in the region.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, during his visit to Damascus, condemned Israel’s actions and promised a decisive response.

He underscored Iran’s support for Syria and its commitment to strengthening the “Axis of Resistance” against perceived adversaries.

Amir-Abdollahian spoke of “the insanity of the Zionist regime,” adding that “our response to the Zionist regime and its punishment is certain.”

He added: “[We are] conveying the message of our country to the United States as a full-fledged support of the Zionist regime and directly response for its crimes and actions.”

The statements from Iranian officials prompted Israel to bolster its readiness measures, including by temporarily cancelling leave for combat units.

While tensions continue to build, the Biden administration has refrained from directly addressing the recent attack in Damascus.

Instead, the focus remains on urging Tehran to pressure Hamas into accepting a ceasefire deal, following mediation efforts by Egypt and Qatar.
