UK weather maps turn ‘rainbow’ as Britain thumped by second 640-mile snow bomb

The UK is to be battered by another 640-mile snow bomb, new weather maps show. According to forecasters at WXCharts a wall of snow will lay from Wick in Scotland down the west of the country to Cardiff on Monday, February 12, while the locations in the UK that are not impacted by snow are set to be hit with heavy rain.

Cardiff, Manchester and Warrington will all see a light snowfall but those further north in Edinburgh, Glasgow and in the Yorkshire Dales are to be covered in the white stuff, with snow as deep as 10cm.

It comes as huge swathes of the country are set to be battered by snow today (Thursday, February 8), with Wales, the Midlands and Yorkshire under a ‘danger to life’ amber alert from the Met Office.

It will be a soggy day for the rest of the country with the south and Midlands to be hit with rain of up to 10mm per hour.

Those worst affected by rain will be the likes of Birmingham, Plymouth and Oxford.

Despite miserable weather in most of the country, those in the east of England and far west of Wales are to avoid both rain and snow on Monday, with a dry and mild day in store.

The Met Office’s prediction for Monday says the UK should expect a “largely cloudy” day with rain in the south and “wintry showers” in the north.

Its Monday forecast read: “Largely cloudy on Saturday with some rain in the south, and wintry showers further north. Drier in the east on Sunday with light winds, cloudier in the west.”

The Met Office’s long-range forecast for next Monday to Wednesday, February 21, said Brits should expect yet more rain turning drier towards the end of the 10-day period.

The long-range forecast reads: “Cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain across northern areas at first, with drier conditions in the south. Becoming mainly dry by the middle of next week, especially in the east, whereas western areas may see some rain or showers spread in from the Atlantic at times.

“Temperatures will probably be around normal, although colder conditions could develop in the east with overnight frost.

“Into the weekend and following week, much of the UK will lie under the influence of predominantly dry conditions thanks to high pressure extending from mainland Europe, albeit with temperatures turning colder. However, milder, wetter weather from the Atlantic will always lie close by, with this encroaching from the west at times.”

Today:

Rain, sleet and snow pushes northwards through Thursday. Snow confined to North Wales, Northern Ireland and northern England, mainly on high ground. Snow turning to freezing rain for north Wales bringing icy stretches. Brighter spells and heavy rain further south.

Tonight:

Rain and snow continue to track northwards into Scotland overnight but intensities decrease. A widespread frost expected away from coasts in the north but more rain moves in further south.

Friday:

Wintry showers continue in the far north. Band of rain and hill snow across central areas move northwards through the day. Cloudy in the south with some showers, locally heavy.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Largely cloudy on Saturday with some rain in the south, and wintry showers further north. Drier in the east on Sunday with light winds, cloudier in the west
