The Met Office has issued a new amber weather warning in anticipation of Storm Isha’s 80mph gales expected to impact the country over the upcoming weekend.
This extensive amber severe weather warning encompasses Northern Ireland, central and southern Scotland, Wales, a significant portion of northern England, and southwestern areas of England.
Scheduled to be in effect from 6pm on Sunday, meteorologists caution that individuals could face the risk of injury, and lives may be in jeopardy due to the potential presence of large waves and airborne coastal debris.
The prevailing cold Arctic air that has held sway over the UK in recent days is giving way to a shift in weather dynamics, as an Atlantic influence takes over.
This change is expected to usher in milder conditions, accompanied by wet and windy weather across the UK on Sunday.
As Storm Isha approaches, both amber and yellow severe weather warnings have been issued. Sunday is anticipated to be notably windy throughout the UK, with many areas likely to experience gusts ranging from 50 to 60 mph, even inland.
Coastal regions are expected to witness widespread gusts of 60 to 70 mph, with the possibility of reaching 80 mph in specific locations.
Chief Meteorologist, Dan Suri, said: “Storm Isha will bring strong winds to the whole of the UK through Sunday and into Monday.
“The areas of particular concern are reflected by a large Amber severe weather warning which covers Northern Ireland, central and southern Scotland, Wales, much of northern England as well as southwestern parts of England.
“In these regions we could see gusts frequently between 50-60mph and even up to 80mph in exposed coastal locations. As the storm starts to move away on Monday morning very strong winds will also develop in the far southeast of England, bringing the risk of 70-80mph gusts here too in the early hours of Monday morning.
“Storm Isha will bring a disruptive spell of weather to the UK with strong winds across the whole country. Heavy rain will cause additional hazards, particularly in the west.
“A number of severe weather warnings for rain have also been issued. Keep up to date with the Met Office warnings and pay close attention to guidance from your local authority.”
