UK weather maps turn yellow as 8-day 'mini-heatwave' finally warms up Britain

Britain is set to witness warmer conditions as the latest weather maps have turned yellow suggesting a “mini-heatwave” lasting nealry eight days.

BBC Weather forecast and WXCharts maps suggest that parts of the country will bask in temperatures between 20-22C from May 7 to 14, bringing in more settled weather conditions.

According to the BBC forecast, the temperature in areas around London will remain high for eight days before the possibility of a rainshower on May 15.

A “mini-heatwave” is generally observed if temperatures are above 20C, especially if at a time of year when you wouldn’t expect temperatures to be that high.

The warmest day during this period is likely to be Saturday (May 11) when several parts of the country could see the mercury rising to 21-22C, maps suggest.

The long spell of settled conditions comes days after the UK witnessed wet and windy conditions. The Met Office has issued warnings for thunderstorms, heavy rain, and flooding as the May bank holiday ends in a washout.

Speaking about the settled weather conditions in the days ahead, Jim Dales, a weather expert from British Weather Services said some areas could even see 23C.

He told Express.co.uk: “High pressure is coming in, making way for settled, warm and mostly pleasant weather. Clouds will come and go but there would be a reasonable amount of sunshine. So, it is going to be the best weather seen so far this year.

“By Sunday, we could see frontal system edging from the west so, the temperatures would turn during the course of the weekend to a little more settled from the West to the East.”

He added: “Most places would see between 18-22C but one or two places could see 23C like southeast England, western Scotland and a little bit of northeast England.

“I think the weather will build over the next few days. It won’t be that warm tomorrow but it will eventually go up before it starts pulling away.”

Meanwhile, the Met Office’s long-range forecast between May 11 and 20 reads: “The coming weekend will probably remain fine for many, with some spells of sunshine for most and it will continue to feel warm, especially in parts of the south and east where temperatures are likely to remain in the mid-20’s.

“Some areas of cloud are likely, especially around some coasts and perhaps later in northwest Scotland, with an increasing risk of a few showers here too.

“Following this spell of pleasant May weather though, it’s all change the following week with conditions likely to turn more changeable across the country, with rainfall likely to be above average in most areas. Some of the rain is likely to be heavy and a few thunderstorms are also likely. Temperatures will return back closer to normal for May.”

Today:

Sunny spells and heavy showers will develop across most of the UK today, some of these heavy and slow moving with the odd rumble of thunder. Cloudier in the southeast with heavy and persistent rain. Feeling warm in any sunshine.

Tonight:

Showers and rain will gradually ease away tonight with partly cloudy skies. Patchy low cloud, mist and fog will develop in places. Turning chilly under clear spells

Tuesday:

A cloudy start, but sunny spells will develop for most through the day. However, staying largely cloudy across the north. A few showers forming in the south in the afternoon.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Largely fine and dry with variable amounts of cloud and some sunshine. Rain will move into parts of Northern Ireland and northern Scotland on Wednesday. Rather warm in the sunshine.
