UK cold weather: Britain to be colder than Iceland with temperatures plunging to -12c

But as the frost bites, so does the cost of living, with many people planning to lower their heating and some planning to turn it off.

Some 2,000 gritters are on standby as up to four inches of snow is due in Scotland today with up to two inches near the west and east coasts of Britain tomorrow.

A heavier snowfall is set to hit the North on Tuesday, with the South flirting with a band of snow due over the English Channel on Wednesday. More snow is expected next weekend.

The freezing conditions brought a spectacular sunrise over Glasgow, pictured, yesterday. But road and rail travel disruption is expected in the days ahead.

RAC spokesman Rod Dennis said: “With the snow risk increasing, drivers should make sure they are fully prepared in case they get stuck. Pack a warm coat, sturdy footwear, a blanket and phone power bank.”

Days will feel like 0C as bitter windchill makes 4C daytime highs in the South and 3C in the North feel even colder until Friday. Night temperatures are set to fall below the -12.5C lowest so far this winter.

Britain will be colder than the -10C lows in Akureyri, Iceland, bordering the Arctic Circle.

A yellow cold weather health warning has been issued until Thursday, warning hospitals to prepare to be busier than normal and ordering health staff to prepare to make daily visits or phone calls to the vulnerable.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “If you thought this week was cold, next week looks even colder, and perhaps more widely wintry.”

A survey commissioned by Swedish clean energy-tech company Aira found Brits were loathe to rely on central heating. Its poll found 65 per cent will lower their heating and seven per cent say they are planning to turn it off completely.

More than three-quarters cited high energy prices as the main reason for enduring the cold, while half cited personal finance concerns.
