UK adults' average ATM withdrawals total £1,484 in 2023

The average adult took out around £1,500 from cash machines last year, data has revealed.

Typically, they withdrew a total of £1,484 in 2023, down £80 from 2022, according to figures from ATM network Link.

Northern Ireland was, once again, the most “cash heavy” part of the UK, taking out £2,340 typically. This was down from 2022’s £2,266.

The North East was second at £1,718, while London was third with £1,684. The South West was in last place with an average of just £1,064.

Last year, weekly withdrawals totalled £1.5billion, but this is down on pre-pandemic figures, with £2.2billion taken out in 2019.

As cash use declines, the number of ATMs has fallen, but Graham Mott of Link said: “There is now a law to protect access to cash. Alongside ATMs, Link recommends new banking hubs and deposit services that will protect cash services across the UK.”
