Tried and true hack for storing bananas will make them last ‘much longer’

A Reddit user has shared a banana storage hack they say will extend the life of your bananas. So if you’re used to your bananas going brown quick, you won’t have to deal with mushy fruit any longer.

The Reddit user wrote in their post: “I often will end up throwing a banana or two away, because it got way too ripe before I had a chance to eat it.

“Recently, I learned that bananas that are close together will accelerate each others ‘ripen speed’.

“I tried separating the bananas and putting them in different areas, and lo and behold, they lasted MUCH longer!”

People chimed in on the tip in the Reddit thread comments section.

“To slow ripening, you need to remove ethylene. You can’t remove ethylene completely, but you can slow its reaction by putting ripe bananas in the fridge.

“The skin of the banana will turn brown, which is normal, and the fruit inside is still good. You can keep bananas in the fridge for a couple weeks and they may not look good, but they still taste great.

“Do not put unripe bananas in the fridge, it will impede the early stages of ripening and spoil the fruit.”
