There really is little else more frustrating than struggling to fall to sleep. It happens to most of us at some point or another – and for some it’s a daily battle.

Now a simple supermarket purchase has been revealed as something that can help you drift off – and you can pick it up very cheaply.

Here we take a closer look at a list of five sleep-inducing foods and drinks – including tart cherry juice, with Dimes Sour Cherry Nectar Juice costing just £1.50 from Asda.

Counsellor and hypnotherapist Susan Leigh talked about the best bedtime snacking for a good night’s sleep for 888 Casino.

Tart cherry juice

Tart cherry juice, often bought in bottles or in powder form, is revealed to be one of the best things to consume for a great night’s sleep.

Susan Leigh says, “It’s not common knowledge, but tart cherry juice is one of the best things to drink for a good sleep.

“It has high levels of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep and wake cycles.

“Fruit and veg in general are great for sleep, particularly kiwi— which contains serotonin and antioxidants that can improve sleep onset, duration and quality— as well as orange juice and spinach.”

Almonds

Susan suggests another excellent before-bed snack – almonds.

She said: “Almonds are a great choice to give you a great night’s sleep. These nuts are rich in magnesium, a mineral known for promoting muscle relaxation and sleep quality.”

Honey

According to Susan eating a bit of honey before bed is a great option to help you get a good night’s sleep.

She said: “Honey can boost the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that induces calmness and sleepiness.”

Chamomile tea

Susan offered an alternative for a night time coffee that benefits sleep.

She said: “Chamomile tea has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may reduce stress and improve sleep. Many people have discovered the value of herbal teas and enjoy an alternative to tea and coffee.”

Avocado

The expert says avocados can also help you relax.

She said “Certain foods, like avocados, can promote better sleep by providing nutrients essential to sleep. Avocados are rich in the nutrient magnesium, which is associated with better rest.”
