The elite US Air Force Thunderbirds have landed at Travis Air Force Base, setting the stage for a high-flying spectacle as the Wings Over Solano air show takes off this weekend.
Gates open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, with the Thunderbirds headlining the event through their signature high-speed, precision aerial formations, a major draw expected to pull in large crowds.
With turnout projected to be heavy, officials are urging visitors to plan ahead.
The Fairfield Police Department has already issued a traffic advisory, warning of congestion around the base and outlining strict entry procedures.
All public access will funnel through the Hospital Gate via Air Base Parkway.
Meanwhile, the Main Gate and North Gate are off-limits to anyone without Department of Defense identification.
Drivers should also note a firm cutoff: inbound traffic will be shut down at 3:30 p.m. each day, with no exceptions.
Security will be tight.
Every adult 18 and older must present valid identification and undergo screening before entering.
To ease the expected gridlock, organizers are offering free electric shuttle rides from the Fairfield–Vacaville train station starting at 9 a.m., with return trips kicking off at 5 p.m.
Attendees are strongly encouraged to arrive early or skip the car altogether.
Ahead of the show, the Thunderbirds made a different kind of appearance Friday, trading roaring engines for quiet inspiration inside Vacaville High School’s packed library.
Every seat was filled as students listened to team members speak about discipline, purpose, and opportunity.
Among them was Maj. Josh Burris, call sign “Shadow,” who flies the No. 2 jet, one of the most demanding positions in the team’s famously tight formations.
He opened by explaining that the Thunderbirds’ mission stretches far beyond dazzling crowds at air shows.
Students will now get to see that mission in action this weekend, when the team takes to the skies over Travis Air Force Base.
