King Charles opened up about his gastronomic preferences today as he revealed he is into curries – but he likes them in a particular way.
The King and Queen Camilla hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace this afternoon for newly elected MPs and members of the House of Lords.
Charles and Camilla were joined by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester as they welcomed more than 300 MPs in the State Ballroom.
Guests included Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, former Prime Minister Theresa May. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also attended.
Deirdre Costigan, Labour MP for Ealing Southall, said she spoke to the King about his “love of curries”.
She said she was impressed that the King was aware that her constituency was sometimes known as Little India and had a big Sikh community.
She stated: “He’s very knowledgeable, isn’t he? So I said, I’m from Ealing Southall, and straight away he was like, oh yes, he knew it was Little India, and he talked about his love of curries.
“And he also said, you’ve got a very big Sikh community there, don’t you?”
The politician went on to reveal that the monarch “talked about his love of curries” and said he told her that he likes them “not too strong”.
She added: “So I asked him to come to Ealing Southall and check out the curry, I hope he will.
“But he also recognised straight away I had an Irish accent. He said, you’re Irish. And he said, it would be great to get a state visit as well.”
Elsewhere, Paul Waugh, MP for Rochdale, said: “He is impeccably polite and knows a lot about every constituency.
“He’s got an incredible encyclopedic knowledge of every area of the UK.”
Asked if they spoke about Rochdale, he said: “Yes, I mentioned that it was the home of the Co-op [supermarket] and I said I hope he shopped at the Co-op and he burst out laughing.
“I took that as a yes.”
