A British tourist has been found dead in a pool of blood in a hotel room in Cancun, Mexico, it has been reported.
The tourist, 58, was found lying dead next to his 53-year-old wife, who was later rushed to hospital.
Detectives rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised at a city hotel just after 5am local time on Tuesday morning.
The tourist was reported to have been found with a broken bottle between his legs. His wife was immediately rushed to the hospital, where it emerged that she may have been under the effects of an unknown substance.
According to sources who are involved in the ongoing investigation, the wife has now been released from hospital.
No arrests have been made as of yet, although the current whereabouts of the man’s wife are not known.
The case is being treated as a homicide, according to local Mexican newspapers, while other reports claimed the dead tourist ended up in a “violent argument” at the City Express Hotel in Cancun before he was found dead.
One local newspaper published photos of the tourist being stretchered into an ambulance under a blue sheet.
Local prosecutors have said that an investigation is still ongoing.
A spokesman for the Attorney General’s office in Quintana Roo said: “After receiving reports a foreign tourist had died in a hotel in the municipality of Benito Juarez, an investigation was launched to clarify what had happened. The initial lines of investigation are pointing to this tragic incident being a possible suicide, in which two people had the intention of ending their lives.”
The spokesman added: “There is currently close cooperation with the consulate to offer the support the families involved need.”
A source close to the investigation said: “Both the dead man and his partner were travelling on British passports.
“The investigation remains open at this stage despite the initial findings.” Another said: “The British man’s wife is now out of hospital.”
It is not currently known if the couple were accompanied by other family and friends.
