Tomatoes are an incredibly versatile and popular fruit to grow in your garden, with the ability to be grown from seeds or young plants, and grown indoors, outdoors or in a greenhouse. The possibilities are endless.

If you want to ensure your tomato plants will grow strong and bigger fruits, gardening experts have suggested using an unconventional natural item. This can be added to the soil to help improve its fertility. Experts suggest using worm castings the next time you want to grow tomatoes.

To make sure your tomatoes are growing in the best environment possible, you need to make sure they’re planted in the best type of soil. Tomato plants thrive in soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.6, according to gardening expert Teri Speight.

You should also make sure it’s well-draining, before adding a dash of compost before painting. You can also use soil with a mix of clay, sand and silt.

However, if your soil isn’t ideal for rearing tomatoes, you can add one unusual natural item to get it primed and ready. According to Martha Stewart, worm castings can help improve the soil’s fertility and aid with plant growth.

Angela Judd, a certified master gardener, told Martha Stewart: “They add trace minerals, improve plant health, and can help tomatoes grow strong and productive.”

This should be added to the soil before planting, ideally. If you’re unfamiliar, worm casts are small heaps of muddy soil which have been ejected from the digestive tract of different species of earthworm. In other words, worm poo.

Compost Magazine praised worm castings for its ability to speed up the growing process, but also how they can impact the size of the veggies you’re growing. It wrote: “If you’re a keen gardener, want to speed up growth or get that kick out of growing bigger, better vegetables, worm castings might be worth a try.

“You can buy worm castings easily enough, or even better make your own castings with a home made or commercially bought vermicomposting system.”

There are a number of benefits for using worm castings, according to research conducted by the University of Maine.

Compost Magazine noted:

Nutrient rich – Worm castings are packed with essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that plants need to grow strong and healthy.

Steady nutrient release – Castings release nutrients gradually, so plants can absorb them over time without overwhelming the soil.

Gentle on plants – Unlike some composts or fertilizers, worm castings don’t cause salinity stress, making them safer for sensitive plants.

Boosts plant growth – Plants grown with worm castings grow larger and healthier compared to those using synthetic fertilizers or regular compost.

Supports soil health – Worm castings help soil microbes thrive, improving overall soil quality and fertility.

Balanced nutrients – Castings provide a stable mix of nutrients without sudden changes, keeping plants and soil happy.

Eco-friendly – Worm castings are a natural alternative to synthetic fertilizers, reducing the risk of chemical buildup in your garden.
