Three ‘most expensive’ hours to use the washing machine – ‘cheapest times’ to do laundry

Brits are washing away their money as well as their clothes as they are switching on their washing machine at the wrong time of day.

People across the UK on average do four loads of laundry each week, which will build up to 208 washes a year and over 13,000 laundry loads in one lifetime, according to the clothing care manufacturer Ariel.

This means the price of laundry can quickly mount up if you are washing clothes during peak times and have much more expensive energy bills.

Samsung, the home appliance store, has shared “most expensive” time of do laundry is between 4pm and 7pm.

They said “Time of use tariffs are usually dependent on demand. The more people using electricity, the higher the price. With this in mind, the most expensive times to use electricity tend to be from 4pm-7pm.”

Ensuring that your washing machine is cleaned every few months and also washing clothes at a lower temperature is another simple way to cut down on costs.

Ariel is also highly encouraging people to wash their clothes at a lower temperature as it is much better for the environment.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Despite the huge amount of washing that people are doing, few consider the environmental impact of it – it’s such a small thing every day which could go on to make a huge difference.

“Lowering the temperature of your wash can go a long way to reducing the environmental impact of your laundry.

“If everyone in the UK washed colder, we could save the same amount of CO2 as taking up to half a million cars off the road.”
