The most expensive place in the British Isles to buy petrol that isn't actually in the UK

The most expensive place in the British Isles for petrol prices has been revealed and it isn’t technically part of the United Kingdom. Groundbreaking research has shown that an island area is the costliest place to fill up your car with unleaded petrol.

Around 20 miles off the south-west coast of Scotland, the Isle of Man has average prices of 154.5p per litre of fuel. With a population of just 84,728, it may comes as no surprise as rural areas often tend to have higher costs due to a lack of alternative options.

The 154.5p average in the Isle of Man is miles above the UK average unleaded price of 146.55p per litre. UK supermarkets average at 142.31p per litre, while motorway service stations charge a whopping average of 170.12p per litre, according to Cromwell Trucks.

While some people might think the Isle of Man is part of the UK, they’d be wrong. The land has never been part of the country, and is instead a self-governing British Crown Dependency. This means that it is not represented at Westminster – or in Brussels – and instead has its own parliament, government, and laws.

It is the same story in islands like Jersey and Guernsey, although they have much cheaper petrol prices – and much nicer weather. The Isle of Man is a popular tourist destination nonetheless, with plenty of fun activities to do – although you might want to leave your car at home.

Punters love to ride the Isle of Man Steam Railway, before hopping over and onto the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway. The two modes of public transport are absolutely iconic in the area – although perhaps not as notable as the two main castles – Peel and Rushen – which dominate the skyline.

Meanwhile, the second, third, fourth and fifth most expensive places to buy unleaded petrol were all in London, with East Central London losing out to the Isle of Man by just 0.1p per litre. This region of London was 4.1p clear of South-West London, where it is 147.3p per litre.

The least expensive area in the UK for unleaded petrol, meanwhile, is Belfast, where it is just 136.8p per litre. Bradford, Wolverhampton and Swansea all follow closely behind.
