The African island with white sand beaches, turquoise water and £2.88 | Travel News | Travel

This stunning African island has been recognised as one of the best destinations in the world according to TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Awards. Cape Verde’s island of Sal sits off the coast of West Africa and is home to several beautiful white sand beaches and soothing turquoise waters.

The island is also known to have what is described as therapeutic salt water in the crater of an extinct volcano – just one example of the tranquil atmosphere that comes with visiting the peaceful island. Not only does it boast the features of a serene escape, but prices across the island are relatively cheap, with a pint even costing as little as £2.88 and a three-course meal for two people only setting you back £34.05, according to cost of living database, numbeo.

TripAdvisor placed the island in its “Best of Best” African destinations, making note of its natural beauty and marine wildlife.

The travel company said: “The Cape Verdean island of Sal is all about the beach, baby. White sand stretches along glassy turquoise waters—perfect for a lazy day of sunning or some heart-pumping watersports.

“Snorkelers and divers will find plenty of tropical fish, turtles, and dolphins to look at. On dry land, kids (and grownups!) will marvel at the Terra Boa mirage, an optical illusion that conjures a peaceful-looking lake in the middle of a large, flat plain.”

The town of Santa Maria offers “the best conditions for a classic beach holiday” according to Cape Verde’s tourism website. The small town features a beach that stretches seven-kilometres and is up to 200 metres wide.

One person who visted in March said: “Cape verde Sal feels like paradise, and this beach is very picturesque, relaxing, and breathtakingly beautiful. I absolutely love Cape Verde.”

Another visitor from the UK said: “It’s a lovely beach with soft sand and some great waves. The lifeguard was there for few hours during the day, always check the flags system, which I think works very well. Waves were amazing depending on the time of the day. Highly recommended to go for a walk or sunbathing.”

UK holidaymakers can fly directly to the island’s apirport Amilcar Cabral Internation from London Gatwick and Manchester Airports.
