The world’s only grand duchy, this region is found in northwestern Europe and holds the title of the richest on the planet.

Nestled among France on the south, Belgium on the west and north and Germany on the northeast and east, its immense wealth is due to its impressive financial sector, strategic location and political stability.

With an area of 998 sq mi, Luxembourg is Europe’s seventh-smallest country and is home to roughly 672,050 people.

Despite its small size, this country packs an almighty punch thanks to its sheer beauty and interesting history.

Luxembourg has become a firm favourite among any who venture here thanks to its historic architecture, with its fortified city centre holding a UNESCO World Heritage Site title.

This area was once a fortress city which cultivated its dramatic topography to triumphantly defeat a large swathe of French and Spanish armies.

The region is also home to picturesque rivers, scenic valleys and lush natural landscapes, offering tourists who choose Luxembourg a one-of-a-kind holiday.

Best of all, Luxembourg’s compactness has made it ideal for lovers of a good stroll with an easily accessible area minus the heaving crowds.

Luxembourg is a charming destination for both city and nature lovers thanks to its impressive culture and array of parks, nature reserves and hiking trails.

From exploring historic sites and meandering around its array of museums to enjoying a host of outdoor activities – you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding ways to fill your days here.

A 10th-century castle on a hilltop offering panoramic views of Luxembourg is found at Vianden Castle. The 16th-century Grand Ducal Palace, the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, is also a must-visit.

Luxembourg’s city centre is where you can learn more about the region’s fascinating and often tumultuous history at Musée d’Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg.

Bock Casemates offers travellers the opportunity to get a glimpse into how Luxembourg once defended itself with a number of cannons still visible today.

This spot has been dubbed the “Gibraltar of the North” and includes a complex network of subterranean tunnels and rocky fortifications.

“It was far from what I expected, so calm and clean and the nature mixed with old landmarks made it amazingly beautiful,” read one review of Luxembourg on TripAdvisor.

Another added: “A hidden gem suspended between history and breathtaking views. The contrast between the ancient city walls and the lush greenery of the valley creates a sense of timeless beauty.”
