Top motoring mechanic Scotty Kilmer has warned all second-hand petrol and diesel car owners should avoid buying parts from certain specialists to swerve paying unnecessarily more. Aftermarket parts stores are likely to stock many more components than high street chains, but road users may pay the price.
Scotty said some commonly used items were dramatically lower at supermarket stores in a major boost to road users. He added buying certain tools off the internet could also help motorists, with savings of up to 50% likely. Scotty made the admission on his YouTube channel where he offers almost daily advice to road users.
He said: “Today I’m going to show you why buying parts at a discount auto parts store may not be such a hot idea.
“I bought this brake cleaner and carburettor cleaner that cost me $14.53 (£10.96) because I was in a hurry.
“The next day I went to Walmart, I could have gotten the same thing for $4.53 (£3.42). Quite a difference between the two.
“The same thing goes for batteries, engine oil, go to Amazon. You’ll often save more than 50% buying the same product from them instead of a supposed discount auto parts store.”
Drivers praised Scotty for the advice with many suggesting they had been caught out by purchasing from auto parts stores.

However, many suggested they disagreed with Scotty’s opinions and would keep using local stores to keep specialists from shutting down.
