Although spring cleaning season may be over, that doesn’t mean it’s time to say goodbye to chores. There are plenty of tasks that still need doing – and some of them are quicker than others.
If you wear jewellery you may have noticed that your silver pieces have seen better days. Over time silver is exposed to humidity and body oils which will cause it to oxidise and tarnish. If your silver earrings are looking more black and grimy than bright and shiny, it’s time to give them a clean.
All you need to ensure your silver jewellery stays perfect is a soft bristled toothbrush and some basic white toothpaste.
Make sure there are no whitening agents in the toothpaste as this can cause damage to your jewellery.
Take your soft bristled toothbrush with a dab of toothpaste on it, gently scrub your jewellery and then rinse and dry it.
Make sure you dry it thoroughly to stop it tarnishing further.
If you are going to utilise this method, make sure that you use it on your large pendants and rings. Silver chains are better cleaned using a bicarbonate of soda bath.
To make one of these, you’ll need to line a small bowl with tin foil. Make sure the shiny side is facing upwards.
Pour in enough boiling water to submerge your chain and 1tbsp of bicarbonate per 500ml of water.
Add your chain and let it soak for up to half an hour. Carefully remove it and let it cool, then buff gently with a soft lint free cloth to bring back its shine.
