Robocalls, out-of-state messages flood Arizona's hotline to report 'inappropriate' curriculum

In the two months since it launched, the Arizona Department of Education’s hotline for members of the public to file curriculum complaints has been flooded by tens of thousands of calls and emails, but most are not relevant to the hotline’s intended purpose, department officials said.

Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne defended the hotline and said he plans to hold a media event soon to disclose what the department has gleaned from the many messages. The hotline was one of Horne’s campaign promises.

“Since its inception earlier this year, ADE has been receiving and compiling legitimate information regarding inappropriate activity occurring in Arizona classrooms,” Horne said. “These complaints have come not just from concerned parents but also from teachers.”
