Remove washing machine smells and mould in seconds with 1 simple task

If you’ve noticed your washing machine is starting to smell musty, eggy, or unpleasant, it could signal a buildup of mould, mildew, or trapped moisture. Mould, mildew, and moisture are breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi, which can cause unpleasant smells to develop. Not only do these bad smells make your home smell unpleasant, but they can also make your clothes smell.

Detergent residue, hair, soap scum and other debris can also cause washing machines to develop an unpleasant smell. Luckily, there is an easy way to stop washing machine smells from forming completely—and it’s super simple.

The quick solution came to light after Gillian Ashworth posted on the group, ‘Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips’ asking, “How can you make your washing machine smell nice? Also, how do you get the black marks from the front of the rubber?”

The post received many responses, but the most common suggestion was to leave the door open after every wash.

Zara Jaye said: “Leave the door open, it’s common sense.”

Sandra Davies replied: “You wouldn’t get the black marks if you leave the door open a little.”

Jo Hooper posted: “I always leave my washing machine door ajar slightly after each wash, and the tray; I use an old cloth to give the inside of the rubber a good wipe to ensure it’s not wet. I’ve had my washing machine for three years, and it has no mould inside the rubber; it’s as new as when I bought it! I think you can use white vinegar to rinse out the washing machine on a cycle!”

Jayne Morgan agreed and wrote: “I do the same. Leave the door open and microwave to stop smells. My washing machine is 15 years old no black on rubber.”

Opening the washing machine door after each wash allows air to circulate around the machine which prevents the environment from turning damp.

The ventilation helps deter bacteria and fungi growth which can cause unpleasant smells to develop.

Other solutions from Mrs Hinch fans included doing a hot wash or doing a cycle with just baking soda and white vinegar.
