Silicone sealant is found along the length of showers, baths and sinks to stop water from reaching the fixtures.
Its rubbery consistency and constant exposure to water and moisture make it the perfect breeding ground for black mould to grow.
It’s also one of the hardest areas to clean, especially if there is a buildup of black mould over a few months. This is the case for many households.
Instead of reaching for a bottle of bleach, there is a cheap product one mum claims “really works”.
Taking to her TikTok account @chloemealor, shared a video on how to remove silicone sealant mould that works in a couple of hours.
Chloe captioned the video: “How to remove mould from your silicone sealant. This really works!”
The TikTok user started by showing her audience the product needed for this hack – sterilising fluid.
The specific sterilising fluid Chloe uses is from the brand Dr Johnson’s. Households can pick up a bottle of this online from Plus Shop for 89p currently.
Showing the product to the camera, Chloe said: “I’ve found sterilising fluid works much better than bleach.”
She then began by pouring the sterilising fluid all along the silicone sealant covered in mould before putting down some kitchen roll over it.
Chloe then went over the kitchen roll with some more of the sterilising fluid to make sure the area was soaked well in the solution.
Then all that’s left is to leave the sterilising fluid to sit for “a couple of hours” or overnight, according to the mum.
After some time had passed Chloe removed the tissue from the silicone sealant and all the mould had completely disappeared.
The silicone sealant looked almost brand new and no scrubbing was needed at all.
