Fergie now hopes that her diagnosis will prompt others to get any worrying signs on their skin tested, particularly given that her father, Major Ronald Ferguson, was diagnosed with skin cancer in the months before he died in 2003, from a heart attack.

The source continued: “[Fergie] was encouraged that people have said online that they have been prompted to get their moles checked out. If only one person did that, then it was worth speaking out.”

Fergie, who was married to Prince Andrew, was treated for breast cancer last year and was diagnosed with malignant melanoma after several moles were removed.

Her representative said: “She is undergoing further investigations to ensure that this has been caught in the early stages. Clearly, another diagnosis so soon after treatment for breast cancer has been distressing, but the Duchess remains in good spirits.”
