Prince William leaves audience in stitches with tongue-in-cheek dig at Tom Cruise

Prince William left the audience at the London Air Ambulance gala chuckling on Wednesday night as he poked harmless fun at Tom Cruise’s helicopter scenes in Mission Impossible.

The American actor looked on as the Prince spoke at the event held at the Raffles hotel in central London, however he fortunately seemed to see the funny side.

William began by thanking Tom for his support of the charity, saying: “I should also take this opportunity to give a mention to my – our – fellow pilot, Tom Cruise. Tom, huge thanks for supporting us tonight.

“And Tom if you wouldn’t mind not borrowing either of the new helicopters for the next Mission Impossible, it would be appreciated.

“We have all seen on our screens that – how can I put it – you seem to have a different take on ‘normal wear and tear’ to the rest of us. It’s not the kind that buffs out.”

William appeared to be referring to a scene in the film Mission: Impossible – Fallout, in which two helicopters crash into each other and burst into a ball of flames on a mountainside.

The Prince also found time to speak about the recent spate of health conditions affecting the royals, as he thanked people for their support of Princess Kate and King Charles as they recover.

Even then he managed to see the light side as he said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you, also, for the kind messages of support for Catherine and for my father, especially in recent days. It means a great deal to us all.

“It’s fair to say the past few weeks have had a rather ‘medical’ focus. So I thought I’d come to an air ambulance function to get away from it all.”

William’s wife Kate has been resting at home after being discharged from hospital following abdominal surgery, and she is not expected to be back at work until Easter at the earliest.

The King was also being treated at the London Clinic at the same time for an enlarged prostate, however further tests revealed he has a form of cancer.
