A pregnant mom in Ohio was shot and killed by her toddler in their home early Friday afternoon, police said.
The woman’s unborn child also died as a result of the shooting.
Laura Ilg, 31, called police around 1:11 p.m. to report that her 2-year-old son had accidentally come into contact with the gun and shot her, according to Norwalk Police Chief David Smith.
When officers arrived at the home, they kicked the door in to get inside. When Ilg and her son were located in the main upstairs bedroom, she was conscious but in great pain, Smith said.
Ilg told police that there were safety measures in place, but she was unaware the child had picked up the gun while she was doing laundry.
She had called her husband, but he was unable to respond since he was at work, Smith said.
Ilg was taken to Fisher-Titus Medical Center for medical attention, but her unborn baby died about an hour later, police said. Ilg died from her injuries a little after 5 p.m.
“If you haven’t heard, Laura and our unborn son Talisen passed away Friday. There are no words for the pain and loss I feel. She was, is, and will always be, the love of my life,” her husband, Alek Ilg posted on Facebook Monday night.
