Nottingham triple killer Valdo Calocane sentence to be re-examined after plea from parents

A paranoid schizophrenic who killed two teenage students and a caretaker in a rampage in Nottingham will have his sentence re-examined after heartbreaking calls from the victims’ families.

Triple killer Valdo Calocane, 32, was last week handed an indefinite hospital order after knifing Grace O’Malley-Kumar, Barnaby Webber, and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, with a dagger in June last year.

He will see out the rest of his days in a hospital setting, rather than a prison cell, which induced outrage from the teenagers’ parents who claimed he had “got away with murder.”

Attorney General Victoria Prentis said she ordered an inspection into the Crown Prosecution Service’s (CPS) handling of the Nottingham stabbing case “so we can properly investigate the concerns raised by the families”.

It will include examining the CPS decision to accept triple killer Valdo Calocane’s guilty pleas to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility and whether the CPS met its duties to consult with families ahead of accepting pleas.

Ms Prentis said: “The senseless deaths of Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates have horrified the country.

“While nothing will bring their loved ones back, the families understandably want to understand what happened in this case.

“That’s why I have asked the inspectorate to carry out a prompt and thorough review of CPS actions so we can properly investigate the concerns raised by the families in this devastating case.”
