Northern city just a two hour train from London is one of UK's top wellbeing hotspots

Your surroundings have an impact on your overall health, wellbeing and happiness.

Quality of life can depend on factors such as air quality, access to green spaces, local healthcare services and even the weather.

Therefore, levels of wellbeing across the UK are varied depending on the experience of residents.

And a survey conducted by floral delivery service Flowercard determined the best locations in the UK for wellbeing.

The survey took into account seven different factors across the UK’s biggest cities, including air quality, gyms per 100,000 people and average life expectancy.

As reported in Country Living, a spokesperson for Flowercard explained: “We wanted to investigate how easy it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and look after your wellbeing in different parts of the country.

“Is there a perfect place for making wellness a central part of your life?

“And are there certain places where wellness is that much more difficult to achieve?

“We’ve looked at seven different factors across the UK’s biggest cities to find out which location is the country’s wellness capital.

“So, from the number of gyms and spas in the area, to local life expectancy, which city will see you living your best life?”

Ranked number one was Brighton on the south coast of England, which was named the best place to live.

But taking the second spot was a “vibrant” and historic northern city, just a two-hour train ride from London.

York was praised for its high wellness scores and long life expectancy.

The cathedral city has a rich history, with its Roman origins.

Situated on the banks of the River Ouse, it has plenty to offer both residents and tourists alike.

Visit York says: “A city where ancient walls surround incredible local businesses, attractions, shops, accommodation and eateries, with exciting events every day and inspiring festivals every month of the year.

“Perfectly placed half-way between London and Edinburgh and with the glorious Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Wolds right on the doorstep, York is unlike any other English city.

“There’s thirty world-class museums you can explore, the best racecourse in the country and a thriving cultural scene.”

While it may be geographically far away from the capital city, a train ride from York to London can take anywhere between one hour and 46 minutes and two hours and 24 minutes.

And it is not only commutable but affordable with average house prices below other areas in the UK.

According to Rightmove, properties in York had an overall average price of £345,077 over the last year.

The majority of sales in York during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £347,678. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £336,165, with flats fetching £221,859.
