New Lidl stores opening in 2024 – could the discount store pop up by you?

In one South London shopping centre, an old unit is currently undergoing refurbishment to be transformed into a Lidl supermarket.

Located in Wandsworth town centre, residents will soon be able to shop at the discount supermarket for produce valued at good prices.

Locals in the area are said to be “lacking an accessible discount supermarket” at the moment, but Lidl should be opening its doors in Southside Shopping Centre by summer.

Around 40 full-time jobs will be made available in the Lidl bakery and store which is famous for its anything-goes middle aisle.

Max Clapton, regional head of property at Lidl GB, commented on the upcoming opening. “We are delighted to be able to confirm plans to bring a new Lidl store to the Southside Shopping Centre in Wandsworth,” said Max Clapton.

“Local households are currently lacking an accessible discount supermarket, so we’re excited to deliver our high-quality produce at the best possible value to those living in the area.”

Lidl’s ambition to open up more stores is currently underway as a bid proposal was made in Walsall in the West Midlands.

There has been some back-and-forth between Lidl and Walsall councillors about the potential new store at Park Lane, Darlaston, that would replace a former bingo hall.

As reported by the BBC, Walsall councillors are concerned about Lidl’s proposal to create an access road off of Park Lane.

Additional concerns include issues over parking and the loss of trees on the site. Lidl has been advised to rework its plan.

Councillor Suky Samra said at the planning committee meeting, earlier this week, that “there is a compromise to be had”. Samra said: “The applicant [Lidl] and the authority [council] aren’t far away in resolving this.”

In Scotland, multiple Lidl stores could pop up in Dunfermline, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cumbernauld. Plenty could be opening up shop in north-east England, in places such as Darlington and Newcastle.

And more stores might be built in Leeds, Otley, Market Rasen and Tadcaster, as well as Totley. Lidl could be bidding for more stores in the likes of Bath, Yatton, St Ives, and Margate.

For now, possible Lidl store openings could be taking in all corners of the UK, including northern Ireland and Wales, but would you be happy to see a store pop up by you?

According to a report by Which? UK, Lidl is the second-cheapest supermarket available on the high street. For 11 months in 2023, Which? UK crowned Aldi as the cheapest supermarket around.

Nonetheless, Lidl is cheaper than other supermarkets, such as Asda, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons.
