‘Ultimate’ must-have item to keep warm without turning the heating on – 3p an hour to run

Following the success of the air fryer and dehumidifier last year, according to experts, a heated throw is becoming the new must-have for 2024.

Serving as a great way to keep warm while working from home, heated blankets can also help to keep you warm on the sofa and in bed.

According to John Lewis, their entry price Dreamland throws is up a huge 500 percent week-on-week.

Matt Thomas, category lead at John Lewis, said: “While temperatures are plummeting, sales of winter clothing and tech are heating up.

“The heated throw has become the ultimate work-from-home staple, plus it’s safely out of shot for any Zoom call, so your colleagues are none the wiser.”

What’s more, the heated blanket can be used to keep clothes or pyjamas warm while you shower too.

There are plenty of heated throws on the market with prices in John Lewis starting at £59.99.

Argos also has a range for sale, with prices starting at around £20, all the way up to £160.

While running costs will depend on the variety you have, it is estimated that they can cost as little as 2.7p per hour to run.

However, it is also wise to have the heating on for some periods to avoid damp and mould within the home.

Other ways to keep the home warm when it’s freezing outside include moving furniture around and bleeding radiators for when the heating is on.

Nick Duggan, managing director at The Radiator Centre, said: “Bleeding radiators at least once a year is a must to ensure they are operating efficiently

“Over time, air will build up in radiators. This means you will not benefit from the radiator’s full heat potential. This may mean you are tempted to turn the heating up or keep it on for longer, both of which will add to the cost.”

To bleed radiators, ensure you have the specific key that can be picked up from any hardware store.

Nancy Emery, heating expert at Tap Warehouse, recommended cleaning radiators regularly to retain heat within the home. According to the pro, this is a “quick and easy fix” which can instantly make a difference.

Nancy explained: “Over time, they’re likely to become a little dirty and dusty which can affect the efficiency of the radiator, so it’s important to vacuum in and around your radiator once a week and brush the dirt from the inside.

“It’s always a good idea to also clean the outside of your radiator once a week with warm, soapy water and a sponge.”
