'My neighbour demands I repaint my fence because he hates the ugly colour'

A man has been left fuming after his neighbour demanded he repaint his fence because he didn’t like the colour. The man wanted to freshen up his front garden for the summer by giving his ‘neglected’ fence a new coat of paint.

However, his neighbour is now threatening to involve the homeowners association (HOA) if he doesn’t return it to its original state, as reported by The Mirror.

Sharing his story on Reddit, the man said: “I share a fence with a neighbour that until last week, was in my opinion, very ugly.

“It was white but the paint was peeling off and it didn’t fit with the aesthetic of my house. I hired professionals to come in and repair the fence and paint my side green.

“The green part of the fence is impossible to see from my neighbour’s house and shouldn’t have bothered them – or so I thought.”

But shortly after having it painted, he received an angry email from his neighbour demanding he remove the green paint immediately.

“He said he was going on a walk when he saw the fence and that he was horrified. He said it looked very ugly and that he shouldn’t have to see it every time he leaves his house. He told me the HOA would take action against me if I didn’t immediately get the fence repainted.”

“Since he’s a very prominent (but not well liked) member of the HOA, I feel like he may be able to back up that threat. I don’t want to re-paint the fence since he was so mean about it and I’d have to pay lots of money to repaint my fence again when I like how it looks already.”

Whilst many internet surfers chipped in that the paint-job should’ve been a joint decision, others were of the opinion that the greener look may just grow on them.

Someone posted: “It’s your fence and you can do whatever you want with it. It’s not like you painted their entire house green as well.”

Another added: “It’s not only your fence its his fence too. He has some rights over the fence. You should ask before painting.”

A third voice chimed in: “Unfortunately depending on the HOA’s policies you may have to repaint it if he pushes the issue.”

One user concluded: “The fence shouldn’t have to look at him when he passes by for his walks – sounds like a very pretty fence.”
