'My mother-in-law made my wife cry – so I threw her out'

A woman whose mother in law made her wife cry has asked if she was wrong to throw her out of the house. The worried woman took to Reddit to ask fellow users of the social media platform whether she was an “a**hole” for telling her mother in law to leave.

Wife Chloe, 34, and the Reddit user, 36, live in a different city to her family and Chloe has always had a strained relationship with her mum.

The issues between the mother and daughter are described as numerous and have included Chloe’s sexual orientation and choice to marry a woman.

Ruth, the mother-in-law, came to stay with the couple and to see her grandchildren, two boys aged seven and five, for about two weeks.

The Reddit user said for the first two days everything went smoothly as Ruth, 60, had her own space and was spending time with the children.

She explained: “Later on, I noticed Chloe was in a bad mood when I came home from work. I asked her about it but she brushed it off as tiredness. I didn’t push it but I did feel a tension between Ruth and Chloe.

“Yesterday, I came home to a crying Chloe, and Ruth was nowhere to be seen. My heart literally broke and shattered into pieces. Chloe said her mother had told her awful things. I’m usually a very calm and controlled person, but that sight just did something awful to my heart.”

The woman said she booked a ticket to her wife’s hometown, knocked on her mother in law’s door and told her she had overstayed her welcome.

They had a “huge” argument, with the Reddit user accusing her mother in law of throwing a few insults in Chloe’s direction.

Chloe later said she was relieved her mother left early because she had no idea how to go through the remaining days with her, according to her wife.

The woman said: “I arranged a car and told Ruth to immediately get going. She finally left. However, Chloe’s phone has been blowing up with messages from her siblings, aunt and uncle saying we were extremely rude to Ruth, and most of them blaming her for marrying and arrogant AH (a**hole) like me.

“Her father called and said how we were horrible to Ruth, that she just wanted to see her grandchildren and we had ruined the family. Was I the AH in this situation?”

A majority of Reddit users backed the woman, telling her she wasn’t an a**hole at all, and was protecting her wife.

One user wrote in response to the post: “NTA (not the a**hole). You are a badass. You not only told her to leave but booked a car and a flight, good for you. Protection of your spouse was the right thing to do.”

Another commented: “This is what spouses do for one another. You did exactly what you were supposed to do.”

A third said the woman wasn’t an “a**hole” but added: “You may have won the battle – but did you win the war? Did you do anything to change her behaviour in a more favourable way for the future?”

But another chimed in: “Visitors should remain respectful to their hosts, whether they’re family or not.”
