'My boyfriend proposed to me as a prank – I've never felt so humiliated'

A woman was devastated after her boyfriend of five years publicly proposed to her – only to then tell her it was all a joke.

Pranks can be a laugh when they’re lighthearted and everyone involved has a good time with them, but they can sometimes go too far, and one woman felt the brunt of it when her boyfriend pulled a cruel joke on her.

The woman took to Reddit to explain that she felt heartbroken after he pulled the stunt in a busy restaurant after years of dating.

She said that apart from his ‘prankster’ antics, she considered their relationship to be “healthy and stable”.

The woman said in a Reddit post: “My boyfriend, Andrew, has always been a prankster and makes jokes with me all the time. I do it to him too but today he took it way too far.”

He planned out an elaborate surprise day out for both of them that even involved an early wake time to go to a couple’s spa day.

She added: “I was pretty surprised because it wasn’t a special day or anything, but I was all in for it. At the spa, he told me how he wanted to go to a fancy restaurant after we were done and that he was paying.

“Of course, I agreed as we hadn’t been out together in a long time. We then got to the restaurant, we had a beautiful and romantic dinner and just a nice time in general. We were talking about a house we were planning to move into and chitchatted about other stuff too.”

Forty minutes into dinner, Andrew got on one knee and pulled out a box from his pocket. She said: “My heart stopped beating. I hadn’t even predicted this. We have never talked about proposals before but I also thought it was a great time now.

“He did a speech about how I was the most beautiful girl in the world and how he wanted to live with me forever and ended with ‘Will you marry me, princess?’ Of course, I said yes!”

But seconds later, Andrew burst into fits of laughter as he opened the box to reveal a piece of paper reading, “You’ve been pranked!”

The woman was horrified and slapped Andrew before breaking down into tears. She broke up with him and ran out of the restaurant.

Adding to her post, she asked for advice on how to deal with the situation. She said: “I am now sitting in my bed crying and I don’t know what to do. He’s been texting and calling me but I haven’t responded because I feel so sad, betrayed, and mostly angry. I thought this was going to be one of the best days of my life. What should I do?”

People on Reddit were unanimously on the woman’s side as they agreed her boyfriend had taken things too far.

“I can’t imagine doing that in a restaurant full of people and all of them watching that,” one said. “To sit and watch one person destroy another like that, it’s like watching a train wreck. He did it in a fancy restaurant and having worked in one I certainly hope the manager made it clear after paying he wasn’t welcome back. What is it with these grown men thinking these outrageously hurtful pranks are ok? Who raised them?”

Another user added: “If she takes him back there will be another prank of him in bed with some other woman later.” A third succinctly said: “This wasn’t a prank. It was a humiliation.”
