Makeup artist's 'no-no' lipstick shade that 'add years' to your appearance

Makeup is often used to help people look younger, often considered an instant anti-ageing remedy.

Lipstick can be applied to enhance the shape and texture of the lips, but according to one makeup artist, wearing the wrong kind can have the opposite effect.

To reap the benefits of the youthful, plumping effects of flattering lip products, Ali Andreea recommended steering clear of certain formulas.

Sharing her advice in a video on YouTube, the beauty expert identified the products that can make dry, wrinkled skin more prominent.

She warned that those with mature skin who want to look younger should follow her advice.

Ali explained that the best and worst lipstick shades are “different for everyone”, but people with ageing concerns like herself should steer clear of shimmery finishes.

She added: “For me, it would be frosty lipsticks. I don’t who would look good with this. In what world would anyone look good with this?”

According to the beauty expert, lipsticks with a “frosted” or glazed finish are unflattering on mature complexions, as are metallic shades with gold, chromatic or silver hues.

Though it may be an unpopular opinion, Ali claimed that even the creamiest formulas should be considered a “big no-no” if they contain shine or flecks of glitter in the pigment.

To demonstrate her point, the makeup professional applied a layer of metallic lipstick only to claim that her lips “look like [she] had been smoking for 20 years”.

Ali pointed out that it’s not the shade of the formula that was to blame, but rather the texture and finish that “emphasises the natural wrinkles” that everyone has on their lips.

There is a way to bring out the plumpness of the lips while wearing less exciting lipsticks, however. Alid suggested combining matte cosmetics in a “plain” shade to inject colour, then using another product for the texture. Ali said: “Just add gloss… it’s that simple!”

Of course, it will still take some careful consideration to match the perfect shade to your skin tone, especially for those with an aged complexion.

The makeup artist identified that certain muted shades can also be problematic for mature complexions.

She said: “One thing that doesn’t work for most of us after a certain age are statement nude lipsticks, with no lip liner. Lip liner we all know adds structure to your lips but when you apply nude lipsticks, it takes the life away from your face immediately.

“I believe that after a certain age, if you’re not applying something that has a pinch of pink or peach and a little bit of shine, I just think it looks completely dull and adds unnecessary years again.”
