‘I’m a mechanic – put this £60 accessory in your boot to avoid being stranded this winter'

A jump-start box is a small battery that can be attached to jump leads, allowing motorists to start a car with a dead battery when no other vehicles are around.

Whilst the boxes vary in price, with the most powerful variants costing up to £400, drivers can buy a simple unit for as little as £60.

However, drivers using a jump-start box must make sure that they have connected the cables correctly to avoid any damage to their vehicle or themselves.

Scotty also recommended that motorists thinking of buying a jump-starter box look at the amount of power it has to see if it is capable of starting their vehicle’s battery.

He added: “You want a good one like this, it has 800 starting amps, whilst the battery in the car is only 550. And if you hook them up backwards, it’ll tell you it’s not ready and it won’t let you destroy the car.

“So, make sure you throw one of these in your trunk so you don’t get stranded, and you can help your friends if they get stranded.”
